Un membre de la secte Aum shinrikyo Makoto Hirata, s’est rendu de lui même après dix sept ans de cavale à la police de Tokyo,il figurait parmi les personnes les plus recherchées du Japon, près de cent cinquante mille affiches à son effigie ont ete placardées dans tout le Japon , Hirata s’est rendu en appelant le numéro des personnes recherchées le 31 decembre, la police ayant cru d’abord a un canular n’a pas donné suite à son appel ce n’est qu’après s’être rendu au district de Shinagawa a Kasumigaseki au siège de la police départementale de Tokyo, qu’il a finalement été arrêté ,

Hirata est implique dans l’enlèvement et l’assassinat d un notaire Kariya dont la soeur essayait de quitter la secte en 1995 par injection d’une dose de produit chimique letale, il a également ete mis en cause dans la fusillade de Kunimatsu dont le delai d’instruction est prescrit.

Il est également impliqué dans une affaire d’attaque à l explosif d’un savant religieux qui a publié une critique du culte de Aum.

Pour les enquêteurs la reddition d’Hirata intervient peu après les condamnations des autres membres, et aurait selon eux le but de retarder l’exécution du gourou Shoko Ashahara même si ce dernier dément par l’intermédiaire de son avocat.
